How To Declutter Your Home Room By Room

Share This Post:

Did you know that living and/or working in a well organized space can increase your productivity and improve your relationship with a significant other?

We are currently obsessing over Marie Kondo’s new Netflix series, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo. She is the author of the world famous book, The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up and the KonMari method, which is, if an item does not spark joy, time to thank it and let it go!

We know this was one of your New Year resolutions so, if you haven’t committed yourself to it yet, what better time to start decluttering then now? And we are here to help 💪

We promise to help you get the most out of your home, room by room, but before you end up tearing out your hair wondering what to do with all the clutter, here is tip # 1:

Get 5 boxes or bins defined for these 5 purposes and start disposing your items 📦📦📦📦📦

1️⃣“Put Away” all the items that are in the wrong spot. Who has forgotten their hair brusher in the living room? 🙋That goes directly into Bin #1

2️⃣“Recycle” all the paper, plastic or glass items that are no longer needed.

3️⃣“Fix/Mend” everything that you love, but that needs extra help to be useful again. What about you favourite pair of pants with a broken zipper? Right into bin #3!

4️⃣“Get rid” of anything that you don’t need anymore! If it doesn’t spark joy, you don’t need it – it’s that simple! Use this bin for all the trash you may find while decluttering.

5️⃣“Donate” all the items that can spark joy in someone else’s life.

Now that you have your 5 bins ready let’s start! Shall we?

Decluttering your Bathroom 🛁

When was the last time you organized your medicine cabinet?

If you haven’t done it in a year or more, it’s probably time to do so now and get rid of all the expired medicine, outdated makeup & forgotten skin care products and dispose them in bin #4.

Everything you’re keeping goes back into the cabinet, storing the items you use most often at eye level and in small boxes, to make it look more organized.

Proceed the same way while decluttering your cabinet drawers, putting the items you use the most in the top one. Same goes for your shower/tub. 🚿

Decluttering your Bedroom 🛏

Before we start we gotta ask you, did you make your bed this morning? So, first step, make sure there’s no unmade bed staring you in the face while you are trying to make your room fresh and tidy!

Second, move onto your nightstands. Put everything that doesn’t belong, in the first bin – finished books, pens, eyeglasses,… – and dispose of anything that you no longer have use for in the respective bins. Categorize all items you are leaving behind, and put them in smaller boxes, to make your nightstands look more organized.

Do the same with the top of your dressers, chests, etc… Then move to the next step.

Empty all your drawers and store all the clothes and items that you no longer use in the donation box, and anything found in the wrong spot, in the first bin. Make sure to resist the temptation to just put them back in the drawers. We’ve all been there! 🙈

Anything you haven’t used in more than six months, you should toss or recycle. As Mari Kondo would say, think, “are any of these still sparking joy in my life?” If not, you know what to do!

Then move on to your closet, take everything out and proceed in the same way.

Decluttering your kitchen 🍳

The kitchen might be one of the most challenging spaces to declutter because it serves multiple purposes, but don’t worry, we’ve got your back! 💪

So, let’s start preparing our 5 bins. Shall we? Once the bins are ready, it’s time to start decluttering!

Let’s start from the top. Empty the pantry and the upper cabinets. Make sure to check expiry dates on all pantry items. Then, move onto the lower cabinets, drawers, and the space under the kitchen sink.

Put back anything you are keeping and dispose the rest into the proper bin. Again, group similar items together and use smaller boxes to make them look more organized.

Next, focus on your countertops, move as many items as you can into the storage (cabinets, drawers,…) keeping out only the things you use daily.

Decluttering your living room 🛋️

This may be the hardest room to keep tidy on a daily basis as it usually doesn’t offer a lot of storage to hide the clutter. So, before you even start decluttering it, here’s what you should consider:

👉Find a permanent storage space for the items that are used regularly such as remote controls, magazines, and books. You can use nice trays for remotes and display your nice books or magazines on your coffee table

👉Declutter this room regularly.

Now, empty your bookcases, console, and side tables. Then move onto your coffee table and entertainment centre and do the same. Categorize all your clutter into the 5 bins and organize everything you are leaving behind. Finally, move onto your electronics, store anything that is not connected to your TV or console and anything that you no longer use or doesn’t function, put in the proper bin.
