Cool Homes: The Glass House

Share This Post:

Is the presence of natural light an important component when choosing your home?

House NA, in Japan (one of our favourite countries), sure offers more natural light than any other home you’ve ever seen. But would you sacrifice your privacy for some extra light?

The abundance of natural light is only a natural consequence of the idea behind this project. Indeed, Sou Fujimoto Architects aimed to create a contemporary adaptation of the richness once experienced by the ancients when living in a tree.

Once upon a time, there were no walls, the branches were not hermetically isolated, yet were connected to one another. You could hear one’s voice from across and above, hop over to another branch, and participate in discussions taking place across branches. There were also no railings or barrier to protect you from falling down from a high branch. And this is exactly what this home is trying to reproduce. Yes, even the adrenaline you feel when you’re sitting somewhere elevated and have no protection. Not really a kid-friendly place, we’d say…

But this home IS stunning! And while the light crossing House NA from side to side makes it look even more beautiful, not having any walls may become impractical when it comes to having some privacy. However, some (a lot of) curtains may do the trick in this case! 😉
